Alex Welles w/ pork belly

Alex is a frequent college student with a great expanse of travel under his belt and a firm belief in the virtues of large smoky fires.  All things being equal he would likely be found expounding on the excellence of pulled pork in some far off South American republic. He generally never strays far without a large collection of books and a pair of well tattered topsiders.

“Growing up a fisherman and gardener, I’ve long had the luxury of eating fresh and eating local. It wasn’t until my first apartment in the city that I fully understood how good I’d once had it. Since this realization, I’ve made a concerted effort to eat more deliberately. Contributing to this blog is my latest attempt in that vein.

In the kitchen I gravitate toward cooking simply, and cooking with vegetables. Out of the kitchen I am a human rights activist and aspiring lawyer.

Podgorica, Montenegro is where I currently live and work, and as such, ‘eating in Montenegro’ will be a frequent theme of my blog posts.”

Owen Maloy striper fishing

Owen Maloy striper fishing

The two greatest influences on Owen’s culinary mindset have been the tutelage of his Mom and his life-long love of the outdoors, with an emphasis on fishing.  Owen spent a great deal of time in the kitchen as a child, acting as his Mom’s sous chef during meal preps and watching Julia Child and The Frugal Gourmet on a small TV positioned right next to the largest span of counter space.

When not at school and not in the kitchen, Owen was typically found fishing with his Dad and Uncle.  Be it striper fishing from shore or boat, or trout fishing early in the morning with a big box of night crawlers, Owen just could not get enough of the sensations associated with feeling the tug of a fish on the end of his line while being surrounded by the most beautiful of landscapes.

The cooking prowess that he obtained from his time in the kitchen combined with the respect for nature and its resources that he gained from his time fishing have molded Owen into the person that he is today.  Owen is a major proponent of sustainable and organic farming, eating locally produced foods, and culinary self-reliance.
