Living in Boston for the better portion of the last three years has made my completely reliant on grocery stores and farmers markets, which I certainly do not have any complaints about. The supermarkets here tend to sell locally produced fruits and vegetables and the farmers markets are loaded with the most beautiful produce I have ever seen. However, since I do not have any land to call my own, I have yet to take a shot at growing my own fruits and veggies. I do not have a yard, but I do have a roof deck, which means 2009 is the year that I attempt to grow a full-fledged vegetable garden while in the urban confines of Boston. I will post a garden update every week in order to keep you all abreast of the progress of my urban farm.
Laundry list of farm produce -
Habaneros
Cayenne Peppers
Orange Bell Peppers
Brandywine Tomatoes
Mr. Stripey Tomatoes
Sungold Tomatoes
Basil
Parsley
Pole Beans
Swiss Chard
Rocket
Spinach
Spearmint
Fennel

I have decided to start all of my goods from seed to make this a really authentic and invested task. I planted all seeds on February 25 between 8 and 10 at night. As of this morning, the only action I’ve seen has come from the rocket, which is fitting I suppose. I am using 100% organic soil and have the seeds divided amongst 100 tiny seed-starting pots. As the seedlings sprout and mature, I will move them to larger pots and start hardening them off after the final frost. The final frost typically occurs around May 3rd in Boston, so my plants will be growing indoors for quite a long while. This being the first post, I do not have much to report, aside from the rocket sprouts that appeared this morning. You can see them below. I’m hopeful that next week’s post will be about how ALL of my seeds have sprouted…
